- Cape Town DA announces 7-point plan to end load shedding in the City
South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA), the ruling party in Cape Town, has issued a 7-point plan to end the load shedding in Cape Town ahead of the upcoming elections in the City.
In a statement issued by the party, the DA outlines the measures it would take to reduce the load shedding in the City. The 7-point agenda includes plans to:
- Break the Eskom monopoly by procuring electricity directly from Independent Power Producers;
- Invest in the Steenbras hydroelectric plant and build a modern energy utility for Cape Town;
- Empower residents and businesses to generate their own electricity and sell excess supply via the City;
- Invest in smart infrastructure and take city-owned buildings off the Eskom grid by installing rooftop solar panels;
- Reduce Cape Town’s carbon footprint by lowering our dependence on Eskom’s dirty coal;
- Lower the cost of electricity over time by increasing supply; and
- Advocate for load shedding rules that don’t penalise metros that proactively diversify supply.
”Restoring a reliable and sustainable power supply that embraces renewable technology and, over time, lowers the cost of electricity will trigger an economic boom in Cape Town,” the statement read.
