SOUTH AFRICA: DFFE Denies Anchor’s Energy Enviromental Permit for Floating Power Plant

  • DFFE denies Anchor Energy’s Environmental Application
  • Raises questions on the effect on the environmental

South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has denied Anchor Energy, an Environmental Authorisation (EA) to moor a Floating Power Plant (FLP) at Richards Bay.

Anchor Energy planned to moor the 6,500MW Nseleni Independent Floating Power Plant (NIFPP). Among the issues raised by the DFFE on the application was the negative impact the mooring of the floating power plant would have on the area’s ecosystem and biodiversity.

Organisations such as groundWork, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) and Natural Justice have welcomed the decision.
This is the second EA being rejected by the licensing department. In June, the DFFE previously denied Turkish firm Karpowership an Environmental Authorisation (EA).
