SOUTH AFRICA: Eskom Announces Stage 2 Load Shedding

  • Eskom announces stage 2 load shedding
  • Load shedding is to continue until Saturday

State-owned utility Eskom has announced that it would implement Stage 2 load shedding until Saturday morning. Eskom has been struggling to build up its depleted emergency reserves following delays in the return to service of some of its power plants. The utility had, over the weekend, utilised emergency reserves to meet demand.

“While Eskom teams have successfully returned a unit each at the Kusile, Matimba and Arnot power stations during the early hours of this morning, further delays in returning other units to service have exacerbated the capacity constraints, hampering the ability to replenish the emergency generation reserves,” Eskom said in a statement.

Eskom expects more generation units to return to service during the week despite ”…a number of generation units running with risk of failure that cannot be attended to at the moment due to the current capacity constraints.” the utility stated.
