The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of South African power utility, Eskom, has alleged sabotage on its transmission network infrastructure. According to Andre de Ruyter, an attack at the Lethabo station in Johannesburg resulted in the collapse of a transmission tower. In a briefing today, Ruyter called the attack an act of sabotage.

The incident, according to Ruyter ”..was not an economic crime, this was clearly now an act of sabotage,” by unknown persons. He added that there was no clear motive for the attack; however, a cutting instrument was used with no equipment stolen.

Eskom is currently dealing with crippling capacity shortages that have resulted in continuous load shedding by the embattled electric utility.
