- Eskom extends load shedding
- Urges consumers to reduce consumption
- Weak infrastructure to blame
The state-owned electricity company Eskom has begun implementing a Load Shedding schedule due to the breakdown of two generating plants. Recall, Eskom had asked consumers to reduce electricity consumption over the weekend or risk the implementation of a Phase 2 load shedding schedule without notice.
In a statement issued yesterday, Eskom says, ”Due to further breakdowns of generating units at Majuba and Arnot Power Stations today, as well as delays in returning units to service at Arnot and Tutuka Power stations, Eskom regrets to inform the public that Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented starting at 10.00 on Wednesday 2 June 2021 until 22.00 on Friday 4 June 2021.” the statement read.
Eskom adds that emergency generation capacity has been used during the day to avoid load shedding resulting in the depletion of available capacity. The company currently faces severe infrastructural constraints forcing the company to implement incessant load shedding schedules.
