- Eskom to shut down Koeberg nuclear plant for scheduled maintenance
- The planned outage will put further strain on the utility’s ailing grid
South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, will implement a staggered shutdown of both units of the Koeberg nuclear power station for scheduled refuelling and maintenance. Unit 2 of the plant will be taken out of service for the next five months and subsequently Unit 1, in a move that will put more strain on the struggling power utility. Both units generate a combined 1840MW.
Eskom, in a statement, said the planned prolonged outage would put a strain on its network in the coming year. “The extended unavailability of the units due to the planned long outages does mean the electricity supply system may be under additional strain during the coming year,” the statement read.
