- The steel industry intends to switch to renewable energy.
ArcelorMittal, South Africa’s steel manufacturer, plans to construct two renewable energy facilities by 2025. The plants will be located in the Gauteng and Western Cape provinces.
The firm is currently carrying out a feasibility study in 2023/2024. The intended plants will have a cumulative capacity of 100MW. According to Kobus Verster, ArcelorMittal SA’s managing director, “This is an important step in our decarbonisation journey.”
As part of its sustainability strategy, the group launched a tender in 2020 to build solar power plants at its operational sites in Vanderbijlpark, Newcastle, Vereeniging, Pretoria, Thabazimbi and Saldanha.
