  • Matzikama, Cederberg, Kannaland and Beaufort West municipalities suffer financial challenges

Four municipalities in the Western Cape owe South Africa’s state-owned utility, Eskom, about R125 million in electricity bills. This comes as Eskom has been struggling to recover billions in consumer debt across the country. The four municipalities, Matzikama, Cederberg, Kannaland and Beaufort West, currently suffer financial challenges that have hindered Eskom payments.

The Western Cape local government confirming the financial challenges of the municipalities, have urged these municipalities to make payment arrangements with Eskom. Spokesperson James-Brent Styan said, ”We urge those municipalities who are in arrears to work with us; we’re happy to help them to see how we can reach payment arrangements with Eskom.”

Styan added that the local government would continue to monitor the situation.
