- Interest groups call for resignation or sack of Eskom CEO
- De Ruyter responds to calls for his resignation
Several interests groups have called for the resignation of the Chief Executive of the South African state-owned utility, Eskom. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), National Union of Metalworkers South Africa (NUMSA), and the Black Business Council (BBC) on Tuesday called on Andre de Ruyter to step down or be sacked as Eskom boss as load shedding was ramped up following the failure of several generating units.
In his response, De Ruyter stated that he would not be handing in his resignation as a change in leadership at this crucial point will not resolve the issues plaguing Eskom.
“I understand that there are frustrations that we are not achieving our objectives as quickly as we would like to, but these frustrations will not be resolved … by changing horses at this point in time,” De Ruyter said.
De Ruyter said Eskom planned to reduce the current “Stage 4” scheduled power cuts to Stage 3 on Wednesday and again to Stage 2 on Friday before suspending the outages on Saturday, as some generation units are due to come back online.
