South Africa Refuses to Discontinue the Use of Coal

  • Deputy President David Mabuza said the country’s energy generation is led by the Integrated Resource Plan 2019.
  • Currently, there are no plans to phase out coal usage because it provides 99 percent of South Africa’s energy and 30 percent of liquid fuels.

According to Deputy President David Mabuza, there are currently no plans to phase out coal as part of the country’s energy mix. He stated that the country’s energy generation is led by the Integrated Resource Plan 2019, which calls for the use of all available energy resources, including coal, gas, and renewable energy sources.

“There are currently no plans to phase out coal usage because it provides 99 percent of South Africa’s energy and 30 percent of liquid fuels. In terms of the IRP 2019, coal is one of our significant natural endowments and will continue to be a part of our energy mix, “he stated. He further said,” South Africa is committed to forging a low-carbon growth path that prioritizes environmental sustainability. We need to ensure that we deploy new infrastructure, technologies, and solutions that enable us to adhere to ambient air quality standards and protect the lives of communities from negative environmental externalities.”

“Going forward, the IRP 2019 proposes using high efficiency, low emissions coal technologies. The government is currently working on other measures such as the Gas Utilisation Master Plan and the Renewable Energy Master Plan”. He noted that these are a part of the medium – to long-term objectives for guaranteeing energy supply security.
