- Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) affected by power cuts
- Advocates licensing for embedded generation
- South Africa has seen an increase in load shedding
Mining companies in South Africa have lamented the increased load shedding schedules implemented by Eskom. Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the world’s largest platinum producers, have stated that the sustained power cuts have affected the mining company’s operations. Amplats Spokesperson Jana Marais said, ”While we have emergency-response plans to manage risks and evacuate employees safely in the event of power outages, load shedding has had an adverse impact on our operations”.
Amplats also advocates for issuing licenses to independent generators to ease the burden placed on Eskom, which generations the majority of energy consumed in the country. “…add additional power to the national grid, ease the burden on Eskom, and facilitate the development of sustainable energy solutions that will unlock economic growth in South Africa”, Marais added.
