SOUTH AFRICA: Timeline for Unbundling Eskom Still Unclear

  • Eskom awaits regulatory license approvals for transmission subsidiary
  • Approvals could take up to 120 days
  • Government and stakeholders in negotiations on timelines

The timeline for the unbundling of South Africa’s state-owned electric utility, Eskom, remains unclear as the utility awaits the necessary approvals for the process. The process will see the unbundling of the utility into generation, distribution and transmission subsidiaries.

The generation and transmission unbundling are expected to be completed by December 2022; however, according to Eskom, ”A more definitive timeline toward operationalization of the new transmission company will be finalized early in the new year following engagements between Eskom, government, and other key stakeholders,”

Eskom still awaits regulatory license approvals for the independent transmission subsidiary and the sign-off of its lenders and creditors, which it expects could take up to 120 days.
