South Korea Plans Joint Production of Green Hydrogen

SK E&S of South Korea, together with its joint venture with Plug Power Inc, has collaborated with Korea Southeast Power generation to produce green hydrogen and ammonia, which will be used for co-firing thermal power plants.

SK E&S and SK Plug Hyverse have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KOEN. The MoU will have power produced and green ammonia and hydrogen distributed and fed into its thermal power facilities and coal. Based on the MoU, hydrogen will be produced both locally and internationally, according to E&S.

The agreement will support KOEN’s goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 48% by 2034. It plans to achieve this through expanding low-carbon LNG conversion and developing carbon capture, usage and storage technology.

The partners intend to use PEM electrolysers made in South Korea by SK Plug Hyverse.

“Given the local production capability of hydrogen and ammonia, it is vital to establish a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain from abroad,” said Sang-Pyo Eun, vice president and head of KOEN’s new business division.

The SK Plug Hyverse JV was set up in January 2022. Among the entity’s plans is constructing a giga-scale hydrogen production plant in the South Korean city of Incheon.
