- 300 tonnes of hydrogen to be produced from hydrogen pant in Mallorca.
- European Union supports the Spanish hydrogen project with US$11 million.
Spain’s first industrial-scale hydrogen plant has been inaugurated by two of the country’s energy companies. Acciona Energia, a renewable energy company, and Enagas (a gas grid operator).
The plant, although just inaugurated, has already started producing hydrogen as of December 2021. As hydrogen consumption infrastructures are entirely in place, a complete operational mode will be swung into action. 300 tonnes of hydrogen is expected to be produced annually, from the plant, with power coming from the 5.85MW Petra and 8.5MW Lloseta Solar farms.
The locally-produced hydrogen will be helpful for the powering of fuel-cell vehicles, heat generation, and powering of commercial and public buildings located on Balearic Island. Transportation of the hydrogen will be done through a specific pipeline that is to be built by a Spanish gas supplier, Redexis, on the Island.
The pipeline construction phase of the project is still seeking permission from the necessary authorities. Still, according to Acciona Energia, construction is projected to have started by the second quarter of 2022.
The European Union financially supported the project with a grant of US$11 million under the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking.
