- Spain triples dependence on gas
- Increases gas imports from Russia
Spain has increased its dependence on gas for electricity following the escalation of international gas prices. As a result, the country has now increased its gas imports from Russia. Spain imported its highest monthly figure for gas imports since 2019 with 6,587GWh gas imports in June. The increase in imports is due to the race to store enough gas for winter.
Germany, France, Italy and Spain have increased their gas reserves in the last few months. Germany has raised its storage capacity from 26% of its total capacity to 53%. France has gone from 26%to 68%; Italy from 48% to 77%; and Spain from 61% of its capacity to 71%.
Russia supplies gas to most European countries through the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline. Russia has become the second-largest gas supplier to Spain, with 40% of gas consumed in Spain coming from Algeria.
