- Commissioned its 50 MW/25MWh battery energy storage system
Iberdrola SA, a Spanish utility company, revealed that it had commissioned its 50 MW/25MWh battery energy storage system, called Gorman and located in Ireland. The project costs about EUR 28 million, with more than 4,000 modules packed in 16 containers that fit into an area the size of a football pitch in County Meath. The project is Iberdrola’s first commercial-scale BESS in Ireland.
The project will serve Irish transmission system operator EirGrid as the DS3 programme for six years. The DS3 programme is an initiative developed by EirGrid and SONI to ensure that Ireland’s power system is securely operating as more non-synchronous renewables are uploaded.
The Spanish utility plans on claiming the portfolio’s capacity to 100 MW in the future. The Spanish group added that the company currently owns 193 MW of storage capacity and a portfolio of projects totalling 1,100 MW.
