SparkMeter has secured new contracts with two Somali utilities to modernise the country’s electricity grids. This move aims to address high electricity costs and revenue losses in Somalia.
Somalia’s electricity prices rank among the highest globally. Utilities, especially in remote areas, suffer revenue losses due to inefficient manual operations. SparkMeter’s digital grid solutions tackle these problems by reducing system losses, improving asset management, and forecasting consumption patterns.
SparkMeter’s pilot program with Caabudwaq Electric Company (CECO), the largest utility in Galmudug State, has demonstrated significant benefits. The company has reduced system-wide electricity losses and improved revenue collection through faster, more accurate meter readings—sparkMeter plans to extend its solution to CECO’s 10,000 customers. CECO now seeks investment for new clean energy projects.
CECO Chairman Mr Giama Guled praised the improvements: “Before SparkMeter, we relied on manual meter readings and data logging, which were time-consuming and prone to errors. The technology has streamlined our processes, reduced system losses, and provided more customer payment options.”
SparkMeter is also launching a pilot with Blue Sky Energy to address system losses further. This follows a successful pilot with the National Energy Corporation of Somalia (NECSOM). SparkMeter is now rolling out its technology across NECSOM’s 20,000 customers. The system will help NECSOM detect and address losses, manage overloaded transformers, and offer flexible billing options. These upgrades will boost NECSOM’s financial stability and increase its renewable energy capacity.
NECSOM CFO Mohamed Ahmed highlighted the advantages: “Previously, meter readings and invoice generation took two weeks. With SparkMeter, we will achieve accurate billing in less than 10 hours, allowing us to focus on other critical tasks.”
SparkMeter operates in over 30 countries, aiming to close the energy access gap in emerging markets. CEO Dan Schnitzer underscored the importance of their work: “Our goal is to close the energy access gap by empowering utilities with smart grid management solutions. We proudly partner with forward-thinking leaders in Somalia to advance equitable energy access.”
Founded in 2013, SparkMeter provides grid management solutions for regions lacking reliable electricity. Its plug-and-play technology supports microgrids and distribution utilities by offering flexible billing, customer communication, and remote monitoring. These features enhance operational efficiency and financial sustainability.
