SSE Pacifico aims to develop 6GW offshore wind farms in Japan, signalling SSE’s focus on the country’s renewable energy market. Japan targets 10GW by 2030 and up to 45GW by 2040 as part of its decarbonisation push.
SSE Pacifico, established in 2021, is a joint venture with SSE Renewables holding 80% and Pacifico Energy holding 20%. President Dai Karasawa states their goal without specifying a timeline or costs. The company plans to auction one project annually starting in the latter half of this decade.
Their pipeline includes projects off the coasts of Mihama in Wakayama prefecture and Omaezaki in Shizuoka prefecture. The company emphasises engagement with local stakeholders to enhance project feasibility.
Karasawa highlights the partnership between SSE Pacifico and Pacifico Energy. About half of the targeted 6GW capacity will use fixed-bottom technology, while the remainder will utilise floating technology.
Japan implemented a new law in 2019 to foster offshore wind farm development. The government plans yearly state auctions for about 1GW of projects until 2030. Revisions to auction rules are underway to address feedback and improve clarity.
