- SSE Renewables is seeking approval to expand its Achany wind farm.
- SSE intends to increase the farm’s capacity by 80MW.
SSE Renewables, part of UK utility SSE, intends to add an 80MW extension to its 38MW Achany wind farm in the Scottish Highlands. This expansion plan is subject to approval from the authorities. Under the proposal, SSE will add about 20 new wind turbines at a site close to the 19-turbine Achany wind park in Sutherland. This expansion will increase the total generating capacity of the facility to over 118MW. The Achany extension will utilise the existing grid connection to the distribution network.
SSE had in 2012 sought approval to add 26 turbines to the park, which was commissioned in 2010. However, the proposal was rejected by the Scottish government in 2015. SSE later redesigned the proposal following the increased adoption of onshore wind in Scotland.
