Sterling Engineering Installs Rooftop Solar Plant in Sri Lanka

  • Sterling Engineering completed a 1 MW rooftop solar project at Falcon Tea Factory, the largest in Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura district.
  • The project supports Sri Lanka’s 70% renewable energy target by 2030, showcasing how traditional industries can adopt clean energy and boost sustainability.

Sterling Engineering Limited has completed a one-megawatt solar project at the Falcon Tea Factory in Ratnapura, marking the largest single rooftop solar installation in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa province.

The project also sets a new benchmark for industrial sustainability in the district and reinforces Sterling Engineering’s role as a leading provider of renewable energy solutions in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, built on a single transformer, the solar plant generates approximately 110,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month, helping the factory cut operational costs and reduce its carbon footprint.

“This one MW installation is a proud step forward for Falcon Tea, setting a new standard for how traditional industries can embrace modern, eco-friendly technologies,” said Indika Liyanage, CEO of Falcon Tea Factory. “Sterling Engineering delivered a seamless, high-impact solution that aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals.”

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka aims to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Solar power is central to that target, supported by government-led net metering and rooftop installation schemes. Industry-driven projects like the Falcon Tea solar plant are vital to meeting national targets, particularly in agricultural regions like Ratnapura, which are beginning to integrate modern energy infrastructure.

In addition, Sterling Engineering Managing Director Shenal Handunge said the project demonstrates the company’s long-standing focus on innovation and clean energy. “We take great pride in delivering high-quality engineering solutions that support Sri Lanka’s renewable energy transition,” he said. “Partnering with Falcon Tea Factory on this significant project has been a privilege.”

Sterling Engineering is known for its large-scale commercial and industrial solar systems and provides energy audits and consulting services. The company also continues to build its reputation as a total energy solutions provider, backed by endorsements from key players in the renewable energy sector.

The Falcon Tea Factory, one of the most prominent tea producers in the region, said the shift to solar power reflects its broader strategy to align operational excellence with environmental responsibility. This trend is gaining traction across Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
