SUDAN: Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Filling GERD Dam in May

A Senior Sudanese Government official has alleged, Ethiopia began filling its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in May. This claim contradicts the announcement by Ethiopia that it would begin filling the GERD in July if the negotiations between the Sudanese and Egyptian governments on the use of the water from the River Nile is not finalised.

Sudan and Egypt are in negotiations with the Ethiopian government on the negative impact of the GERD construction on the River Nile. The Egyptian government, last week said the country was prepared to absolve any impact ahead of the second phase of filling in July. Also, it will not hesitate to protect its interests against actions by the Ethiopian government.

Ethiopia began constructing the controversial GERD in 2011 and plans to generate electricity 6,450MW from the hydroelectric project.
