SUDAN: Sudan and Egypt to Construct Transmission Connection Line

  • Sudan and Egypt to construct a transmission line
  • Project to added 240MW to Sudan’s national grid
  • Sudan currently experiencing power cuts

The Electricity Transmission Company of Sudan has announced the separation of the northern state of the country from the national electricity grid and its subsequent transfer to the electrical interconnection project with Egypt. The governments of Sudan and Egypt are currently working on establishing an inter-country transmission connection. The project will add an additional 240MW to the Sudanese national grid.

Director of the National Control department at the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company (SETC), Eng. Mohamed Mukhtar Al-Tayeb has issued an apology for the persistent power cuts in the country. He also assured that the country is taking adequate measures to restore stability in supply. ”The root of the problem is related to resources, and the state does not provide capabilities”, Al-Tayeb stated.

He called on the government to develop a specific plan to end the interruptions and attributed the morning and evening power cuts to increased loads. On the connection project, Al-Tayeb stated that the project is ”expected that the Egyptian connection would provide 240 megawatts if the problems with the withdrawal (of electricity) are also addressed”.
