Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki) has closed a deal to set up four biogas production plants in India. The contract is a three-party agreement between Suzuki Research & Development Centre India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Suzuki in India; the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB); and Banas Dairy.
In December 2022, Suzuki signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NDDB and Banas Dairy to commence the biogas demonstration project. The project targets fuel production for automobiles by refining methane from biogas. The four biogas production plants will start operation by 2025 in Banaskantha district in Gujarat.
The total budgeted investment of the four biogas plants is INR 2.3 billion (approximately €25.2 million). The contract covers the set-up of a biogas filling stand alongside each plant. Each filling stand will distribute fuel for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. Of these CNG vehicles, Maruti Suzuki holds over 70 per cent market share in India.
The contract closing ceremony held today at the Indian Embassy in Japan had in attendance the Ambassador of India to Japan, Sibi George. Also, Banas Dairy’s chairman, Chaudhry, NDDB’s chairman and managing director, Shah and Suzuki’s president, Suzuki, were present.
Commenting on the project, President Suzuki said, “Suzuki is reducing greenhouse gas in ways that suit the situations of each country and region. In India, there is an expectation for biogas, which is said to have high reduction effects. We will contribute toward realising carbon neutrality through making proactive initiatives in the biogas production business.”
