Uganda has for the fourth consecutive year emerged Africa’s best-regulated electricity sector according to the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Electricity Regulatory Index 2021. The AfDB’s ranking saw the regulatory performance of African countries measured across key metrics.

The Electricity Regulatory Index 2021 report highlighted the regulatory performances in 43 countries; 3 countries in the North Africa region; 14 in West Africa; 6 in Central Africa; 7 in East Africa; and 13 in the Southern Africa region.

“Uganda topping the rankings consecutively for four years comes as no surprise to many, as the regulator spends significant time on consultation and analysis, including regulatory impact assessments of key interventions and follow-through to ensure full implementation,” AfDB’s Director, Energy Finacial Solutions, Policy and Regulation Wale Shonibare said.

”Uganda (0.823),Kenya (0.688), Tanzania (0.669) Namibia (0.663), and Egypt (0.609) are the top five
performers of the ERI 2021.” the report reads.

Nigeria ranked 23rd in the report while the Republic of Congo ranked last. Ghana, Egypt and South Africa ranked 7th, 5th and 14th.
