The project, which French company Hydroneo East Africa is developing, was allocated a $1 million development loan by the UK government-funded renewable energy financing platform. The project will be a run-of-river plant harnessing the rapids of the Mpanda River to produce 10.2 MW of electricity.
Samuel Zekri, Hydroneo’s CEO, notes that the project will help Burundi realise its national development plan of developing and powering health and education facilities. “We are delighted to join forces with REPP and our local partners to meet the growing needs of Burundian families and businesses,” he added.

The Plant, when completed, will supply 10 per cent of the country’s total energy supply to the state-owned grid, the Burundian water and electricity board (Regideso). Burundi’s current capacity of 34 MW comes from hydroelectric power, 6MW thermal power, a 400kW grid-connected solar plant and hydropower imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The post REPP Allocates $1m to Mpanda Hydropower Project appeared first on The Electricity Hub.

Hydroneo Set to Resuscitate Hydropower Project in Malawi

News

Renewable Energy

Hydroneo

Hydropower

Malawi

REEP

Hydroneo has signed an agreement with Finergreen in a bid to reach a financial close on the Mpanda hydroelectric project. The project is expected to reach a financial close next year. The hydropower plant will have a total capacity of 10.2MW.

Finergreen will support Hydroneo to structure the project’s operations financially. The Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP), a UK government-funded scheme managed by Camco Clean Energy, will also support Hydroneo to raise the total investment of $43.5 million required for the project.

Hydroneo has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to sell energy produced to the Régie de production et distribution d’eau et d’électricité (Regideso). To reduce the biodiversity impact of the project, developer Hydroneo will develop a run-of-river plant, which will harness the rapid flow of the Mpanda River to generate electricity.

The post Hydroneo Set to Resuscitate Hydropower Project in Malawi appeared first on The Electricity Hub.
