Electric vehicles (EVs) are gradually making their mark in Liberia, a country that has traditionally relied on fossil fuel-powered transportation. Introducing EVs is a significant step towards reducing emissions, promoting sustainable mobility, and fostering economic growth.

One of the key players in this emerging market is New Energy Electric Vehicles (NEEV), an e-mobility startup aiming to revolutionize Liberia’s transport sector. NEEV offers a range of eco-friendly, reliable, and sustainable electric tricycles, bikes, and vehicles. These EVs provide a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuel vehicles, helping to reduce emissions and promote environmental stewardship.

Another notable development is the introduction of DENKI Electric Vehicles by Tuma Enterprises, Inc. This marks a historic milestone for Liberia, as it positions the country with access to cutting-edge electric vehicle technology. DENKI’s diverse range of models, from mini EVs to spacious SUVs, are equipped with state-of-the-art battery technology, delivering impressive range and robust performance. Tuma Enterprises is also committed to establishing a robust charging infrastructure and vehicle maintenance facilities across Liberia to support widespread EV adoption.

In collaboration with its partners, the LEAP Network has also launched electric vehicles in Liberia. This initiative is a significant milestone towards transforming the transport sector into zero-emission vehicles. The LEAP Network aims to develop policies to govern the new industry and ensure that the benefits of EVs are maximised.

Despite these advancements, there are still challenges to overcome. Some hurdles that need to be addressed are the lack of a formal country electric vehicle plan and the need for a robust charging infrastructure. However, the efforts of companies like NEEV, Tuma Enterprises, and the LEAP Network are paving the way for a cleaner, greener future in Liberia.

The introduction of electric vehicles in Liberia is a promising development that holds the potential to transform the country’s transportation sector. With continued investment and support, EVs could play a crucial role in reducing emissions, promoting sustainable mobility, and fostering economic growth in Liberia.

Turkish Airlines secured financing for two Airbus A321neo jets using a multicurrency JOLCO structure with a sustainability-linked loan.

The deal, structured by Société Générale, aligns with the airline’s targets to reduce fleet carbon emissions and supports its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

Over the past decade, Turkish Airlines has secured $16 billion in financing and won over 30 awards for its innovative financial models.

Turkish Airlines, Turkey’s flag carrier, has successfully secured financing for two Airbus A321neo aircraft using a sophisticated multicurrency Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO) structure. The financing deal, announced by the airline on Friday, September 20, includes a sustainability-linked loan facility, reflecting Turkish Airlines’ commitment to reducing its environmental impact while pursuing fleet expansion.

According to the airline, the financing was secured at one of the lowest costs in the industry, underscoring its expertise in leveraging award-winning financial models to drive growth and sustainability.

The JOLCO structure is a popular operating lease model in aviation finance, allowing the lessee the option to purchase the aircraft at a pre-determined price, either during the lease period or at the end of the term. In this case, the deal was structured by Société Générale, a leading global financial services group, and is closely tied to Turkish Airlines’ ongoing efforts to meet its Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs).

These targets include reducing the carbon intensity of the airline’s growing fleet as part of its broader environmental strategy. The key performance indicator (KPI) linked to the loan focuses on minimising the fleet’s carbon footprint, aligning with the company’s goals to improve sustainability metrics.

Murat Şeker, Turkish Airlines’ Board Member and Chief Financial Officer, expressed his satisfaction with the deal, emphasising its significance for the airline’s sustainability agenda. “As an airline that has been recognised as the ‘Most Sustainable Flag Carrier Airline’ by World Finance for three consecutive years, we are proud to integrate sustainability into our aircraft financing processes,” said Şeker.

He further highlighted the strategic importance of this financing arrangement in supporting the airline’s ambitious goal to become carbon-neutral by 2050. “This agreement is not just about renewing our fleet but about ensuring that we are doing so in a manner that promotes sustainable growth and reduces our environmental impact,” he added.

Turkish Airlines, which boasts one of the world’s largest and most modern fleets, continues to lead in the aviation finance sector with innovative financing models. Over the last decade, the airline has secured nearly $16 billion in financing for its fleet and operations, receiving over 30 international awards for its leadership in aviation finance.

Prestigious organisations such as Global Transport Finance and Airfinance Journal have repeatedly recognised the airline’s financial strategies, praising its ability to secure low-cost funding while adhering to best practices in sustainability.

The airline’s finance team has been pivotal in negotiating competitive financing terms, allowing Turkish Airlines to expand its fleet while maintaining industry-leading cost efficiencies. As the global aviation industry faces increasing pressure to meet environmental standards, Turkish Airlines remains committed to integrating sustainability into all facets of its operations, from aircraft financing to operational practices.

The airline’s dedication to sustainable aviation is further supported by its adoption of new-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft like the Airbus A321neo, which contributes to lower emissions and improved fuel economy.

In the coming years, Turkish Airlines plans to expand its fleet, with sustainability remaining a core pillar of its strategy. The airline’s long-term goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050 will be underpinned by ongoing investments in greener technologies, efficient aircraft, and environmentally responsible financing solutions.

Despite higher initial costs, EVs offer lower operational and maintenance expenses, making them cost-effective for high-mileage users like taxi drivers and farm managers.

The lease-to-own model and battery-swapping solutions lower upfront costs and reduce charging downtime, enhancing the accessibility and practicality of EVs in rural areas.

EV adoption improves air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions while creating job opportunities and advancing rural electrification efforts through mini-grids.

A report, “Integrating E-Mobility with Mini-Grids in Rural Nigeria,” highlights the transformative potential of electric vehicles (EVs) in Nigeria’s rural areas. The Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria partnered with Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) to conduct this comprehensive study, shedding light on EVs’ economic viability and practical benefits compared to traditional vehicles.

The study reveals that despite the higher upfront costs associated with EVs, their total operating costs (TCO) over their lifetimes match those of conventional vehicles. This revelation holds particular significance for rural Nigeria, where cost considerations are paramount, and the need for efficient, sustainable transportation remains critical.

Economic benefits

The report underscores several critical advantages of EV adoption that can significantly impact rural communities:

1. Cost Per Kilometer: One of the most compelling points highlights the cost efficiency of EVs with increased usage. The report notes that EVs become more cost-effective with more frequent use. This advantage benefits high-mileage users such as taxi drivers and farm managers, who can lower operational costs over time. Traditional vehicles incur ongoing expenses related to fuel and maintenance, whereas EVs, with their more superficial mechanical structures, require less frequent and less costly maintenance.

2. Lease-to-Own Model: The study introduces the lease-to-own model as a viable solution to high upfront costs. By spreading the initial investment over a more extended period, this model makes EVs more accessible to a broader range of users. This financial approach can democratize access to advanced transportation technology, enabling more individuals and businesses in rural areas to transition to electric mobility without the burden of significant initial expenditures.

3. Battery Swapping: The report presents battery swapping as an innovative solution. This approach eliminates the need for upfront battery costs and reduces downtime associated with charging. Instead of waiting for batteries to recharge, users can swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones at designated stations. This enhances the convenience of EVs and ensures continuous operation, which is crucial for commercial applications such as taxis and agricultural machinery.

Social impact

Beyond the economic benefits, the adoption of EVs in rural Nigeria carries significant environmental and social implications. Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. Moreover, the shift to EVs can stimulate local economies by creating new job opportunities in the manufacturing, maintaining, and operating of electric vehicles and associated infrastructure.

Developing mini-grids to support EV charging can further enhance rural electrification efforts, providing reliable and clean energy to underserved communities.

Future directions

While the report presents a promising outlook for EV adoption in rural Nigeria, it also acknowledges several challenges that need addressing. These include the initial high costs of EVs, the need for robust charging infrastructure, and the importance of raising awareness about the benefits and feasibility of electric mobility.

The report recommends concerted efforts from government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and international partners to overcome these challenges. Policy support, financial incentives, and public awareness campaigns can play pivotal roles in accelerating the transition to electric mobility.

In conclusion, the “Integrating E-Mobility with Mini-Grids in Rural Nigeria” report marks a significant milestone in developing sustainable transportation in Nigeria. Highlighting EVs’ economic, environmental, and social benefits paves the way for a future where electric mobility is accessible, driving progress toward a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Nigeria.

Norwegian investment fund Norfund has announced a $307 million investment in Kenya’s electromobility sector, focusing on the start-up BasiGo. Norway’s Foreign Affairs Minister revealed the investment during his visit to Nairobi.

Kenya’s green mobility sector continues to increase, attracting international investors. Supportive tax incentives and new electric vehicle assembly plants drive this trend, which is highlighted by Norfund’s substantial investment.

BasiGo has already supplied 24 electric buses to Kenyan public transport operators. BasiGo’s CEO, Jit Bhattacharya, welcomed the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs at their Buruburu site to discuss a strategic partnership for low-pollution, cost-effective transport.

“Trade between our countries increased by 30% from 2021 to 2022. About 45 Norwegian companies operate in Kenya, mainly agritech and renewable energy. Our visit to BasiGo shows Oslo’s commitment to regional growth through strategic investments. We anticipate future opportunities, especially in e-mobility,” said Minister Espen Barth Eide.

BasiGo’s fleet includes 25-seat K6 and 54-seat E9 Kubwa electric buses. The start-up plans to assemble 1,000 more units for the Kenyan and Rwandan markets in the next few years. This investment will create at least 300 jobs for young Africans, with further growth expected through Norfund’s support.

Norfund’s investment aims to enhance Kenya’s green mobility. The country’s government actively promotes electric vehicles and related infrastructure. The collaboration with BasiGo aligns with these goals, aiming to reduce pollution and improve public transportation.

Kenya has become a regional leader in green technology, attracting investments from various international partners. The government’s policies and incentives have created a favourable environment for start-ups and established companies.

BasiGo, focusing on electric buses, leads this movement. The company’s efforts to expand its fleet and infrastructure are crucial for the country’s sustainable development goals. Norfund’s investment will accelerate these initiatives, providing much-needed capital and expertise.

The partnership between Norfund and BasiGo represents a significant step towards a greener future for Kenya. It underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges. As Kenya continues to develop its green mobility sector, investments like these will play a critical role in shaping the country’s future.

Norfund’s $307 million investment in Kenya’s electromobility sector, particularly in BasiGo, boosts the country’s green mobility ambitions. With supportive government policies and international partnerships, Kenya is well-positioned to become a leader in sustainable transportation.
