- Kokam will supply a 15MW energy storage system in Tahiti.
- The system will save over $1.4m in fuel costs.
South Korean battery maker Kokam Co Ltd will install a 15MW/10.4MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Tahiti, French Polynesia. The energy storage system will help reduce the Island’s diesel fuel consumption, allowing for more renewable energy to be added to the grid.
Kokam signed the contract to deliver the battery system with Electricite de Tahiti (EDT), a subsidiary of French utility Engie SA. The battery storage system will replace EDT’s diesel generators which act as a spinning reserve for the grid.
EDT estimates that the batteries could reduce fuel costs by up to about €1.25 million ($1.47m) annually as clean energy integration increases. It is also expected to save moe in reduced operations and generator maintenance costs.
