- Tanzania activates the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant.
- The first turbine adds 235 MW to the grid.
Tanzania marks a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant. Energy Minister Doto Biteko unveiled the first turbine, contributing 235 MW to the grid, aiming to double the nation’s power capacity.
This move is expected to alleviate power rationing, with plans for the second turbine to join next month. However, amidst the celebration, conservationists voice concerns over the plant’s location within the UNESCO-protected Selous Game Reserve.
They fear potential impacts on wildlife and habitats. Despite objections, the project garners support from past and present administrations and is seen as pivotal in enhancing electricity access.
Biteko reassures the public, vowing to uphold water sustainability in all hydro projects. Before this development, Tanzania boasted a capacity of 1,900 MW, with natural gas dominating energy production.
