- All villages in the mainland to be connected by 2022
- REA Phase 2 launched
- Villages in Mthara and Tabora regions to be connected to electricity
The government of Tanzania has set a deadline of 2022 for the connection of all villages in the mainland. Mthara and Tabora regions in the mainland are the only areas with villages without electricity access. Speaking at the launch of Phase 2 of the Rural Energy Agency (REA) project, the Minister of Energy Medard Kalemani stated that the project would connect at least 1000 villages to electricity.
Kalemani urged the contractors on the project to ensure that the project is completed at the set deadline. “I would like to see contractors working day and night to ensure that the projects are completed within the agreed period,” said Dr Kalemani and insisted that the government will never extend the contract period”, Kalemani said.
The government of Tanzania finances the REA project in collaboration with the World Bank for Sh62.146 billion.
