- TANESCO losses up to $7 million due to sector inefficiency
- He also explained the inefficiency affecting revenues in the sector
The newly appointed Director-General Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) Mr Maharage Chande has explained the challenges in the Tanzanian electricity sector. Chande stated that the state-owned utility losses about $7 million monthly due to the inefficiencies in the sector. He listed power losses, technical and non-technical issues as the challenges hindering service delivery.
”Tanesco is a big organisation, which collects a revenue worth of Sh1.8 trillion per month, but 60 percent of that money is a loss due to efficiency issues. But, if we can install smart meters to large and domestic users we can save around $3.5 million,” Chande said.
Chande promised to do all within his power to resolve the sectors issues. He also added that the under his leadership, TANESCO would improve consumer engagements. ”….we will ensure our staff are well engaged with customers and serve them better.” he said.
Maharage Chande was appointed by President Samia Hassan in September 2021.
