TANZANIA: TANESCO Turns to Gas to Ramp Up Electricity Generation

State-owned electric utility, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is looking to ramp up electricity generation using gas. TANESCO is installing additional natural-gas powered plants in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam to improve its generation capacity by at least 345MW.

The Managing Director, TANESCO Maharage Chande stated that the utility will ensure the plant is installed by the end of November. Tanzania generated 40% of electricity from the countrys biggest hydropower stations at Kihansi, Kidata, and Panagani which have been impacted by drought.

“We are speeding up the renovation of some plants including Ubungo I which will generate 25MW, the expansion of 185MW Kinyerezi I and Ubungo III with 112 megawatt,” Chande said.
