- TANESCO to construct transmission line in the Mtwara region
- Construction to begin in December 2022
Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Steven Byabato, has explained to the Tanzanian Parliament the Ministry’s plan to improve power supply in the country. In a session at the Parliament, Byabato stated that the state-owned energy firm Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) is expected to begin implementing the Mtwara region transmission line project.
The project, which costs TSh132.7 billion, is expected to kick off in December 2022 and will last for 12 months, with a December 2023 deadline. The project will involve the construction of a 395km 132-kV transmission line in the region. The Minister also added that TANESCO is in the process of conducting a feasibility study of the project.
The Mtwara region transmission project would extend from Songea to Masasi via Namtumbo and later Tunduru and Nanyumbu. TANESCO is also constructing 132/33kV power stations in the Ruvuma and Mtwara regions.
