World Bank approves funding for ZESTA
- Project to benefit 400,000 households
The World Bank has approved a total of $142 million in funding for the Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Access Project (ZESTA). In a statement released on Friday in Dar es Salaam, the World says the project will benefit 400,000 households by providing access and improved electricity supply services. The project will also result in a reduction in the annual system outages and associated losses.
World Bank Country Director for Tanzania said, “With a median age of 17 years and only 57 per cent of citizens accessing electricity currently, investments in energy are urgently needed to contribute to improved human capital, remove constraints to more and better jobs, and enhance productivity”.
The ZESTA project is to be implemented by the Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals, the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation and the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority.
