- On July 1, 2024, TCN installed two new 60MVA transformers at the Apapa 132/33kV substation to enhance the power supply in Lagos.
- The upgrade aims to improve the substation’s capacity, reliability, and efficiency in handling increased electricity demands.
- TCN Managing Director Engr. Sule Abdulaziz highlighted the transformers’ role in reducing power fluctuations and outages, saying that testing and installation will proceed swiftly.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has enhanced the Apapa 132/33kV Transmission Substation by installing two new 60MVA power transformers on July 1, 2024. This development, announced on Thursday on TCN’s X handle, aims to improve power transmission and stabilise the electricity supply in Lagos.
The new transformers will significantly boost the substation’s capacity, allowing it to handle higher load demands more effectively. This upgrade will improve the efficiency and reliability of electricity transmission to residential, commercial, and industrial users in Apapa and nearby areas.
Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, the Managing Director of TCN, emphasised that the new transformers will play a critical role in strengthening the power infrastructure in Lagos State. He stated that this additional capacity will help reduce power fluctuations and outages, thereby enhancing the quality of service for consumers. “These transformers will significantly cut down on power interruptions and stabilise the electricity supply,” Abdulaziz said.
TCN will conduct rigorous tests on the transformers and their accessories to ensure they meet all technical and safety standards before they become fully operational. The company plans to expedite the installation and commissioning process to minimise disruptions to the power supply.
This upgrade aligns with a broader initiative by TCN and the Federal Government to modernise and expand the national grid. This effort aims to create a more robust and reliable power infrastructure that can support Nigeria’s economic development and meet the increasing electricity demands of its growing population.
TCN calls on residents and businesses in the affected areas to be patient and cooperate during installation. The company emphasises that any temporary inconveniences are a small price to pay for the long-term benefits of a more reliable and efficient power supply. “We understand that some short-term challenges might arise,” Abdulaziz stated, “but the outcome will be a more dependable and sustainable electricity network for Apapa and beyond.”
This enhancement aligns with TCN’s strategy to improve power distribution and strengthen the national grid, contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and stability.
