- Restores 60MVA TRI transformer at Kukwaba, resuming bulk power supply.
- Galadimawa, Games Village, National Stadium, and more benefit from restored power.
- Prompt repair of sudden smoke issues ensures the stability and reliability of the power grid.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored bulk power supply through its 60MVA TRI transformer at the Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation. This crucial restoration occurred on June 13, 2024, at 5:51 p.m., following an emergency intervention to address and rectify the sudden smoke emission from the transformer.
The emergency necessitated an immediate inspection and troubleshooting of the transformer to identify and resolve the cause of the unexpected smoke. TCN’s swift response and efficient situation handling ensured the transformer’s full operational status, allowing it to resume its critical role in the bulk power distribution network.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, confirmed the successful restoration without delay, underscoring the company’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted power supply and addressing technical issues promptly. “We have effectively rectified the issue and restored the transformer to full functionality. Our swift action and resolution were imperative to mitigate any prolonged disruption in power supply,” Mbah stated.
With the 60MVA TRI transformer back in service, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Abuja Disco) can now off-take bulk power for distribution to several key areas. The restored power flow benefits customers in Galadimawa, Games Village, National Stadium, Sunny Vale, Kabusa Gardens, TSF Eye Clinic, AMMSCO Estate, Sun City, and various parts of Kabusa. Additional areas receiving power include Same Global, Durumi, American International School, Sabo Lugbe, TradeMore Estate, Pyakasa, Aleita/Chika, and Ako Estate.
Reactivating the transformer stabilises the power supply and meets the electricity needs of these communities. Due to the transformer’s temporary outage, residents and businesses in the affected areas faced uncertainties regarding power availability. TCN’s rapid intervention to diagnose and repair the fault demonstrates its proactive approach to managing the power transmission infrastructure and ensuring reliability.
Despite resolving the issue, TCN acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the transformer’s downtime. Mbah apologised to all affected customers, emphasising their efforts to minimise the outage duration and restore normalcy swiftly.
TCN’s handling of the situation highlights its readiness to address emergent technical challenges and sustain the integrity of the power transmission network. Their commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction remains evident as they work to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the power supply system.
As the power supply normalises, residents and businesses in the impacted areas can expect consistent electricity flow, facilitating regular activities and contributing to the region’s economic stability. TCN continues to monitor the performance of its transmission assets and plans to implement further measures to bolster the national grid’s robustness.
