National Grid Restored After Fire Outbreak at Afam Genco — TCN

  • TCN stated that the loss of units at the power station resulted in a generation loss of 25 MW and 305 MW.
  • Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) had reported a grid collapse, affecting the Discos’ ability to distribute power to their customers.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the complete restoration of the national grid following a fire incident at the Afam Power Generating Station. According to TCN, the fire outbreak caused a partial disturbance of the national grid.

In a statement released by TCN on its X handle and signed by Ndidi Mbah, the general manager of public affairs, TCN stated that the loss of the units at the power station resulted in the generation loss of 25 megawatts (MW) and 305 MW.

Earlier today, electricity distribution companies (DisCos) reported a grid collapse, affecting the Discos’ ability to distribute power to their customers. According to the latest Independent System Operator (ISO) data, the grid generated a meagre 266.50 MW of electricity from Okpai, Geregu and Ibom power shortly after the collapse.

The statement read in part, “At 02: 41 hours today, 15th April 2024, a fire erupted at the farm V 330 KV bus back coupler, leading to the tripling of units at Afam III and Afam VI. This resulted in a sudden generation loss of 25 MW and 305 MW, respectively, destabilising the grid and causing a partial collapse.

“During the incident, the Ibom power plant was isolated from the grid and was supplying parts of the Port Harcourt Region. This further minimised the effect of the system disturbance. TCN confirms that the affected section of the grid has been fully restored and stabilised.”

TCN reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the national grid’s resilience and reliability and pledged to continue investing in measures to strengthen the grid infrastructure.
