The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has upgraded the infrastructure at two transmission substations in northern Nigeria.
- The Yauri and Jos transmission substations were energised with 40MVA, 132/33kV power transformer and a new R2 75MVAR 330kV reactor.
- Both projects are part of projects slated for execution in TCN’s Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP)
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has installed transformers at two transmission substations in Kebbi and Plateau states in northern Nigeria. The Yauri and Jos transmission substations were energised with 40MVA, 132/33kV power transformer and a new R2 75MVAR 330kV reactor.
With this new addition, the Yauri substation capacity has been increased to 80MVA, capable of providing power output to six 33kV feeders.TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, nothed that four of the feeders, Yauri, Koko, Zuru and Ingaski, are currently operational. The remaining two will cater for future demand from Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC). The project was initially awarded to a private contractor, suffered a slow spate of development, causing the TCN to take over. TCN engineers have installed two 40MVA transformers over in two years.

According to TCN, the reactor installed at the Jos 330/132/33kV transmission substation will complement the existing R1 75MVAR 330kV and enable the company to transmit stable and quality voltage to Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe and parts of Benue, Taraba, Yobe and Kaduna States.
Mbah noted that “the Yauri and Jos substations projects are part of projects articulated in TCN’s Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP), and TCN intends to continue to ensure the diligent implementation of the projects which is geared towards putting in place a robust and very efficient grid.”
