Italian power grid operator Terna SpA seals deal for EUR 1.9 billion Tyrrhenian Link project. The project involves a 1-GW DC undersea interconnection line between Sardinia, Sicily, and the Italian mainland.

Terna signs a 22-year loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for EUR 500 million. This adds to EUR 1.4 billion of previous financing disbursed in 2022 and 2023.

The Tyrrhenian Link project, costing EUR 3.7 billion, will create a submarine electricity corridor. It will connect Sicily with Sardinia and the Italian peninsula.

The project envisions constructing two 1-GW DC undersea power networks, each spanning 480 km. The eastern segment will link Sicily with Campania, while the western segment will run from Sicily to Sardinia.

The eastern segment is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The entire Tyrrhenian Link is projected to be completed by 2028.

Once operational, the cable network will support the integration of renewable energy sources and enhance energy security and grid reliability.
