- Elon Musk has announced the Tesla plans to build the world’s largest battery-cell factory at the cite of its Gigafactory near Berlin.
- The factory will have an initial annual production capacity of 100GWh and subsequently ramped to 250GWh.
- This factory has the potential to create about 10,000 jobs for the german market.
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk recently announced the company’s plan to construct a battery-cell factory at the company’s electric car plant near Berlin. Construction of Tesla’s first European factory has already commenced in Gruenheide, south of Berlin and will be completed next year. The Gigafactory is expected to produce about 500,000 Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs annually.
The proposed battery cell production factory would begin with a production capacity of around 100GWh a year, and then ramped up to to 250 GWh per year. Elon Musk is confident that it will be the largest battery-cell plant in the world. However, Tesla is yet to file building applications for the battery facility. According to research from the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe, such a facility will require 4,000 employees initially, and then 10,000 when ramped to optimum annual capacity.
German chambers of industry and commerce predict that there will be a shortage of about 31,000 skilled and technical workers next year. However Teslas, attractive employment package could help the company navigate this deficit if and when the battery facility is constructed.
