- Texas grid to experience record-high demand
- Heatwave continues in the state
- Temperatures are expected to reach 36 degrees celsius
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the power grid operator in the state, has forecast electricity demand to reach a record high in the coming week. With temperatures expected to reach 36 degrees celsius, ERCOT forecasts electricity demand will reach 74,668 megawatts (MW) up to 76,908 MW in the coming days. Texas previously recorded an all-time high demand of 74,820MW in August 2019.
The United States has been hit by severe extreme weather conditions that have affected Texas’s grid network this year, including the February freeze that knocked out power to millions and record heat in the Pacific Northwest earlier this summer.
Electricity traders have projected prices in the state will increase.
