- The African Development Bank (AfDB) will host the Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam on January 27-28 to advance universal African electrification.
- The summit aims to secure partnerships, financial resources, and political commitments to support the Mission 300 plan to provide electricity to 300 million people by 2030.
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB), the World Bank Group, the African Union (AU), and the Tanzanian government have reaffirmed their dedication to advancing Africa’s path toward universal electrification.
In a recent statement, the AfDB revealed that it will host a crucial summit to support this goal. The Africa Energy Summit, scheduled for January 27-28 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, will bring together Heads of State and Government leaders, private sector leaders, development partners, donors, experts, civil society organisations, and academics.
The summit’s primary objective is to secure the necessary financial resources, partnerships, and political commitments to achieve the ambitious Mission 300 plan and advance the universal electrification goal.
Launched in April 2024 by the AfDB and the World Bank, Mission 300 aims to provide electricity access to 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. The initiative focuses on two primary strategies: increasing investment in infrastructure and implementing policy reforms across the electricity supply chain.
With nearly 600 million people in Africa, 83% of the global energy deficit—lacking access to electricity, the urgency for action is at an all-time high. The summit will serve as a platform to strengthen efforts and accelerate Africa’s electrification progress, aiming to transform lives, improve livelihoods, and promote economic growth. Experts and stakeholders will discuss strategies for mobilising investments, expanding energy access, and overcoming challenges that hinder progress, ensuring Africa stays on track to meet its energy goals.
Collaboration between African nations, international partners, and the private sector will be key to ensuring that Mission 300 is achieved and leads to lasting positive impacts on Africa’s socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
