The Causes of Voltage Fluctuation

More often than not, we have had experiences of voltage fluctuation which seldom burns phone chargers and causes other electrical accidents to appliances. But what exactly leads to this incident

It is the continual change in the voltage when appliances that require a high load are vastly used. Voltage variation devalues the expectation of electronic devices and leads to instability of the internal voltages and current. For instance, flickering lights, dimmer lights or brighter lights, incandescent bulbs blowing prematurely, failure of electronic equipment, and interference with radio or TV reception.

The cause of voltage fluctuation ranges from a wide number of variables but there some core factors that are commonly responsible for this mishap and they include:

• Poor power output: – This can be seen as a consistent lack of access to a reliable power supply.
• Heavy household appliances: – This is one of the most common causes of voltage fluctuation. The use of these appliances in your home or your neighbours’ home without a good stabilizer would definitely cause voltage fluctuation. (learn more)
• Strong weather conditions causing electric lines to clash: – Weather conditions like heavy rain, thunder, and lightning can lead to trees clashing into electric lines, powerlines falling into each other.
• Inappropriate construction of electric poles: – When electric poles are not mounted well or poorly constructed, incidents like electric poles falling to the ground or breaking off, would become common and part of the result is voltage fluctuation.

How can we better manage the voltage variation in our homes?

The effects of voltage fluctuation cannot be over-emphasised in our homes, however, listing its causes and effects is not enough. It is paramount we know how to manage these incidences as it cannot be fully prevented. The following are possible ways of managing voltage fluctuation; use of appliances with a manageable voltage, use of good stabilizers, installation of surge protectors, proper construction of electric poles, and regular inspection of electrical installations.
