- The Edo State Government has inaugurated a 1-megawatt solar power grid in Ohovbe, providing 24-hour electricity to over 2,000 homes.
- Edo State Commissioner highlighted that the project aligns with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to stable power, following legal changes enabling states to generate and sell electricity.
The Edo State Government has unveiled a new 1-megawatt solar power grid in the Ohovbe community in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. The commissioning ceremony, held on Monday, was led by Engr. Marvellous Omobayo, the Deputy Governor of Edo State.
Dr Ojiefoh Enaholo, the State Commissioner for Mining and Energy, spoke at the event, highlighting that the new solar power grid will provide continuous electricity to over 2,000 households in the community. This initiative aligns with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to ensuring stable and reliable electricity for residents throughout the state.
Enaholo outlined the project’s significance, noting that it represents a significant step in addressing the long-standing issue of erratic power supply and high estimated billing faced by Edo State residents. He referenced similar solar power projects previously inaugurated in the Eyean community and upcoming projects at the Military Hospital in Benin City and the Irrua Specialist Hospital, which are also set to be commissioned soon.
The Commissioner praised the legal framework that has facilitated these advancements. He explained that, historically, electricity regulation was under the exclusive federal list. However, Governor Obaseki leveraged changes in the 2023 electricity Act that empowered states to generate and utilise power for local facilities.
This legal shift led to establishing the Ossiomo Power Plant in Edo State. Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration initially passed the law allowing states to generate and sell power, and President Bola Tinubu’s administration has since begun its implementation.
Enaholo emphasised that the solar power projects in Edo State are designed to provide reliable electricity and boost economic activities in the communities they serve. By addressing the energy needs of underserved and unserved households, these projects are expected to stimulate local economic growth and enhance the quality of life for residents.
The launch of the solar power grid in Ohovbe is part of the Edo State Government’s broader strategy to improve energy infrastructure and support sustainable development. As the state continues to invest in renewable energy, these efforts are anticipated to bring lasting benefits to its communities, fostering greater economic stability and progress.
