To address concerns over electricity tariffs, the House of Representatives has instructed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Distribution Companies (Discos) to immediately reverse the recent tariff increase imposed on Band ‘A’ customers.
The directive follows the adoption of recommendations from the House Committee on Power, presented by Hon. Victor Nwokolo during a session chaired by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu. Hon. Nwokolo summarized the committee’s findings, emphasizing that NERC and Discos must revert to the previous tariff rates initially outlined by the House.
He further detailed that NERC and Discos are mandated to comply with the provisions stipulated in Section 116(2d), (3b) of the relevant legislation within 60 days. Additionally, the committee proposed engaging an independent team of experts to investigate and determine the cost of electricity tariffs.
The House’s decision includes a directive for all Electricity Distribution Companies to revert to the old tariff structure until the legislative body resolves the matter. Moreover, the committee recommended that future tariff adjustments be implemented gradually in phases, contrasting with the sudden increase that sparked public outcry.
This move by the House of Representatives underscores a commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring transparency in regulating electricity tariffs. It signifies a proactive step towards addressing public concerns and fostering a fair and sustainable pricing framework for electricity nationwide.
The directive is expected to relieve Band ‘A’ customers and pave the way for a thorough review process that aligns with regulatory requirements and public expectations regarding electricity affordability and accessibility.
