The Jabi Lake Mall and Nigeria’s Burgeoning C&I Solar Sector

  • CrossBoundary Energy (CBE) and Actis commissioned the 609kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) project a year ago.

  • The project is the first fully operational Mall solar hybrid project in Nigeria.
  •  Actis intend to launch similar projects across its real estate portfolio over the next decade.

The Minister of State for Power, Mr Goddy Jedy- Agba, yesterday visited the Jabi Lake Mall Solar Hybrid project in Jabi, Abuja. The project is the first fully operational Mall solar hybrid project in Nigeria. CrossBoundary Energy (CBE), alongside Actis – the UK-Investment management firm that owns the mall –  commissioned the 609kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) project a year ago. The rooftop system comprises 1,848 solar PV modules generating about 850 MWh annually.

The facility has reduced the Mall’s reliance on diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions by about 3,000 tonnes. The mall architecture adopts a “green-by-design” approach incorporating ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) sustainability principles to accommodate solar renewable energy.

The minister noted that the solar hybrid project at Jabi Lake Mall is one example of Nigeria’s pioneering role in clean energy transition and also highlights the critical role Nigeria is already playing in the UK COP26 Energy Transition Council (ETC).

The United Nations Special Representative of Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, Ms. Damilola Ogunbiyi, also added that the project represents a good example of UK private sector companies like Actis implementing sustainable clean energy transition projects at scale across the African continent, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UK’s COP26 Energy Transition Campaign.

This project is an example of private-sector-led investment in sustainable architecture and clean energy in Nigeria. Actis intend to launch similar projects across its real estate portfolio over the next decade.
