The Kwara State government has announced plans to construct an Independent Power Plant (IPP) to generate electricity for sale and utility services. Engr. Abdul Azeez AbdulGaniy, Commissioner for Energy, shared these details during a media briefing in Ilorin, the state capital.
AbdulGaniy emphasised that the proposed IPP is expected to stimulate economic growth and create new regional job opportunities. He noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to renewable energy, incorporating solar, thermal, and biogas solutions to help reduce air pollution and promote a healthier environment for residents.
The Commissioner also pointed out that this initiative is part of the broader framework established by the 2023 Electricity Bill signed by President Bola Tinubu. This bill empowers state governments to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, intended to foster economic development and attract investment to the state.
He highlighted the ministry’s achievements, including implementing transformers across communities in Asa, Moro, Ilorin West, and Kaiama local government areas.
Additionally, he announced that the construction of an 11KV dedicated feeder from Agba-Dam is underway, along with arrangements for the immediate release of a 15MVA 33/11KV power transformer to Alagbado and Sobi communities.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved these initiatives. He is committed to addressing the needs of the state’s residents and has also sanctioned the immediate installation of a transformer allocated for Reke in the Asa local government area.
AbdulGaniy noted that the government is actively exploring partnerships with private investors to enhance the state’s energy infrastructure. These collaborations are expected to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy technologies and improve the overall reliability of electricity supply in Kwara State.
The Commissioner reiterated the administration’s commitment to engaging with local communities to meet their energy needs, fostering a more sustainable and economically vibrant environment for all residents.
