- Eurocell EMEA to establish Europe’s first battery cell gigafactory in the Netherlands.
- E-mobility applications call for an initial expenditure of $800 million.
The Netherlands will be the location of the first European Gigafactory for battery cells, according to the Anglo-Korean next-generation battery business Eurocell EMEA, which is in advanced negotiations with Dutch authorities.
According to Eurocell EMEA, the plan to construct a factory to manufacture batteries for energy storage, automotive, and e-mobility applications calls for an initial expenditure of $800 million. The business claims these batteries will last more than ten times as long as typical lithium-ion cells.
Eurocell EMEA will install the production capacity in two stages. It plans to begin manufacturing in early 2023 to serve current customers, with total production expected to be completed by 2025. The second phase, which may occur at the exact location, will allow for the manufacturing of more than 40 million cells.
“As we enter the final stages of discussions, we are confident that we will be able to confirm the exact location of our first European Gigafactory shortly,” said Nick Clay, chief commercial officer, Eurocell EMEA.
