The University of Lagos (UNILAG) launched a new initiative on Monday by unveiling buses powered by solar energy and electricity, aiming to promote zero-emission transportation on campus. Additionally, the university revealed its updated logo during a media event in Lagos.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, introduced the buses and the new logo, emphasizing the importance of sustainability. She explained that the buses, which were made and donated by two UNILAG alumni owners of Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services will be used for public transportation within the university. The buses are designed for sustainability, powered by solar energy and can also be charged through electricity.

Ogunsola highlighted that the university is committed to maintaining its good air quality and reducing pollution, especially emissions from vehicles. She also pointed out that the previous university logo no longer represented UNILAG’s brand, and the updated logo was intended to align with the institution’s current image and goals.

Expressing gratitude to media organizations for their support and constructive feedback, Ogunsola shared her optimism for the future. “We are looking forward to a great and better 2025 for everyone, including students and staff,” she said.

Mr. Itunu Okusami, Consultant-in-Chief at Chart Eco Global Services, noted that the company partnered with UNILAG because of the institution’s strong track record in technology innovation. Okusami also mentioned the initiative’s potential to enhance the university’s work-study programs and reduce transportation costs for students.

Henry Eke, Chairman of Ogata Global Resources, expressed his pride in introducing the fully electric, zero-emission buses to his alma mater, emphasizing the environmental benefits of the project.

At the event, Mr. Mojeed Alabi, National President of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria, thanked UNILAG’s management for their ongoing support of education reporters.

The new buses were tested by some members of the university management, marking the beginning of UNILAG’s commitment to greener, more sustainable transportation options.
