The Wales’ first envisioned floating wind farm, the 100-MW Erebus project in the Celtic Sea, has received approval from the Welsh government.
The project is being constructed by Blue Gem Wind Ltd, a partnership between TotalEnergies and Simply Blue Group, 40 kilometers (25 miles) off the coast of Pembrokeshire. It will include seven 14 MW turbines that are anticipated to go into operation in 2026.
Following Natural Resources Wales’ recent grant of a maritime license for the project, the Welsh government has now given its approval. Erebus is now free to proceed with requesting aid from the UK government.
The Welsh government noted that an initial phase of 4 GW renewables development is planned for the Celtic Sea.
“Erebus, which will be the first floating wind farm in Wales, will play a crucial role in advancing the deployment of what will become a globally important low carbon technology,” stated Mike Scott, project managing director at Blue Gem Wind.
