- Through the Rural Electrification Agency, the federal government launched a 100-kilowatt solar hybrid mini-grid in Uhuafor Nomeh, Enugu State, to provide power to over 3,000 households.
- The project, funded by the Rural Electrification Fund, supports Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and economic development, as the REA and Enugu State officials emphasised.
The federal government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving rural electrification by providing sustainable energy solutions. Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director and CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) made this statement while commissioning a 100-kilowatt solar hybrid mini-grid in Uhuafor Nomeh, Enugu State.
Aliyu, represented by Dora Uboh, Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), explained that the project was funded through the REF, which aims to promote off-grid electrification and ensure equitable electricity distribution across Nigeria. The new facility will power over 3,000 households, contributing to the community’s socio-economic development.
He highlighted that this initiative comes at a crucial time when there is an urgent need for safe and sustainable energy solutions to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Aliyu emphasised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritised the power sector and is committed to enhancing energy access through projects like this.
The REF has facilitated the deployment of over 50 solar mini-grids nationwide, providing clean energy to thousands of Nigerians. The REA remains focused on serving underserved communities with reliable power.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, represented by his Special Assistant on Power, Joe Aneke, expressed support for the project, noting its alignment with the state’s commitment to sustainable power supply and its potential to boost local economic development.
This solar mini-grid project not only enhances energy access for the Nomeh community but also exemplifies the federal government’s commitment to addressing the energy needs of underserved areas in Nigeria. As the country continues to pursue sustainable energy initiatives, such projects are vital for driving socio-economic development and improving the quality of life for rural populations.
